The Mangere Wastewater Treatment Plant is Auckland’s largest, dealing with over 70% of Auckland’s wastewater. Biosolids, the byproducts of this treatment process, are currently transported to the neighbouring Puketutu Island as part of a project to rehabilitate it. However, by 2035, the Puketutu Island Rehabilitation Project will be phased out, and a new strategy will be needed to deal with Auckland's biosolids.
Wire producer Liam spoke with Andrew Deutschle, head of wastewater planning at Watercare, about what Auckland’s wastewater system looks like, the challenge and potential solutions we are facing with our biosolids, and how Aucklanders can be involved and provide feedback in this process.
We played a bunch of new tunes this week that've already become firm faves! Spotlit artists incl. DJ Plead, PTMusic, Gush, Slim Levy and Sandy B & Sofa Elsewhere. We have plenty of locally grown goodness too with The Sour, Disasteradio, Jonathan Bree and Rachel Clarke just some of the class acts featured. Donzig, The Stooges and Make A Dance shook the cobwebs out to finish.
The government announced their budget last week, which included 38 million dollars of cuts to conservation in New Zealand. This comes amid other moves by the government, including the disestablishment of the Ministry for Conservation as well as the Conservation Amendment Bill which could see protected conservation land sold off.
For Green World this week, producer Liam spoke to Richard Capie, Chief Advisor for Forest and Bird, about what the government’s budget means for conservation, what impacts it will have on the environment and how this fits into the government’s approach to the environment.
